Stone columns were from the very beginning structural essentials. They
supported the walls and the roof. Arcitects have always put efforts to
convert there structures to a decoretive element. In Indian architecture,
they were adorned with carved statues. In European styles they were given
different finishes. With a decorative base and top.
Today one can use this technique to give an accent to the building. A more
economical version could be stone cladding the column in the appropriate
stone.
